Dear Colleagues,

due to the LARTS refurbishment and the reduction in available classroom, many faculty are having their long-standing teaching schedules modified with changes to one or all of day, time and location for their courses. As the Fall 2025 teaching schedules are being finalized by the Registrar and Dean’s Office and distributed to faculty I want to remind everyone of the contractual language around faculty workload.

  • Faculty teaching assignments shall be decided by the Department Chairperson in consultation with members of the department and must be acceptable to the Dean of the College or School. In the Law School, faculty teaching assignments shall be decided by the Dean or Dean’s designee in consultation with members of the department and must be acceptable to the Law Academic Council.
  • Faculty may be assigned to teach classes between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
  • Faculty in the School of Law may be assigned to teach classes between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
  • In no case, will faculty be required to teach a class that ends more than eight (8) hours after the beginning of their first class of the day, or to teach classes on more than five (5) days in a week.
  • There is no contractual provision that requires faculty be assigned classes only on a MWF or TuTh schedule.

The Federation has recently been informed that some department Chairs are being told that teaching faculty can be assigned sixteen (16) teaching units per semester.  This is incorrect.  The Faculty Federation CBA is very clear as to the maximum teaching load that can be assigned to full-time faculty.  These are:

  • For tenured/tenure-track faculty, the typical teaching assignment each semester is nine (9) teaching units (seven (7) in the School of Law and fifteen (15) for faculty in the College of Visual & Performing Arts teaching only studio courses), including the TUs associated with the supervision of graduate students (see Article VIII(B)(3) for details), less any reduction from course buy-outs or approved course releases.
  • For full-time teaching faculty, the typical teaching assignment each semester is twelve (12) teaching units, including the TUs associated with the supervision of graduate students, less any reduction from approved course releases. The minimum teaching assignment is twenty (20) TUs in an academic year unless approved by the Dean.
