Massachusetts has just set a huge example for the rest of America by approving free community college! After a long series of drawn-out negotiations, the Massachusetts State House has set aside enough money to make all community colleges tuition free.In addition to making community college tuition-free for all residents, the budget sets aside funding for stipends for additonal costs such as books and supplies.

The next challenge we face is defending this hard-won milestone. Funding for community colleges is insufficient as is: increased demand expected from making community college tuition-free will necessitate even more funding for community colleges to ensure they can rise to the occasion. The rest of America is watching: if successful, Massachusetts’ tuition-free community college program could not only uplift countless citizens of Massachusetts but also inspire other states to pass their own versions. But that all depends on the work we do to strengthen critical funding for community colleges in the following years. Because if not, opponents in Beacon Hill and beyond will take every chance they get to shut it down.

If you’re passionate about high-quality, affordable higher ed for all in Massachusetts, write to Governor Healey through the Governor’s Council and tell her to protect funding for free community college in Massachusetts!
